Hollywood Studios Sue Over DVD Ripping

Hollywood movie studios have filed a lawsuit against Real Networks over a business practice known as “rent, rip, and return.” This new technology, developed by Real Networks, allows individuals to go to a video store, rent a movie, loan the DVD into a computer and then burn a new copy of the DVD.

Hollywood movie studios are concerned that this practice violates copyrights and is going to cost them billions of dollars a year. This practice, the studios allege, is basically stealing.

Real Networds claims that the company just wants individuals to get full use of their DVDs by allowing owners to make backup copies of their DVDs.

Interestingly, the same United States District Judge in San Francisco that shut down the mp3 website Napster is hearing this case.
